A few years ago I sang Tenor for a performance of the B Minor at Canterbury Cathedral as part of the Anglo-American Chorus concert. It was awesome, but very difficult to learn well. We were accompanied by a small chamber orchestra and chamber (chest) organ. Our conductor was Brian Kay, one of the original King Singers and former director of the famous Huddersfield's Chorus in Birmingham.
That referred to the American Civil War. The music was, however, written very much later, in the 20th century It is a wonderful piece of music like most of V-W's choral works, and the part to which you refer is extremely moving as the music portrays the funeral cortege of the dead soldier passing by.
Because of reading your blog, I decided to scribble my own. I had not in any degree been interested in keeping a blog until I aphorism how helpful yours was, then I was inspired!
I believe that gold would only shine after it passes through fire, as diamonds would glitter after being hammered. That is how I see myself. I have been through it all, and now it's my turn to shine...
